Bluesky vs X: My 7-Day Experiment

I ran an experiment and did the same things on both platforms for a week. Here are my results.

Bluesky (BSKY) kept popping up on my feed. News about companies leaving X and indie hackers sharing amazing results on some of their posts over at Bluesky gave me FOMO.

I really don’t want to manage another social media or distribution channel, but I did want to understand the fuss about this new option. So I decided to run an experiment over 7 days to see which one performs better: X or Bluesky.

My Method

I decided to take two actions on both platforms:

  1. Post every 2 days in the "Build in Public" community.

  2. Reply to 3 posts every day in the Indie Hacker community.

I only have 70 followers on X, so I felt like both platforms got a fair shot.

After 7 days, here are my results:

Key Takeaways:

  1. Better Results on Bluesky: Despite starting from scratch, I gained more followers and had more interactions on Bluesky. X has a larger audience, but Bluesky feels like a more level playing field with less saturation.

  2. Content Quality vs. Quantity: On X, it was easy to find engaging content to respond to. On Bluesky, I found myself forcing reactions just to stay active. It was harder to get the same level of engagement, though I still saw good results.

  3. Consistency Matters: Showing up daily and engaging with the community made a big difference. Whether you’re on X or Bluesky, consistency is key to building an audience.

Which Platform Should You Choose?

Ultimately, it comes down to what feels natural to you. I’ll stick with both platforms—X for the larger community and Bluesky for the growth opportunity—but I’m not trying to over-optimize.

Hope you enjoyed this update! If you’re building something or have thoughts to share, feel free to reach out. I’d love to hear about your experience.Keep building,
